Celebrating our culture   Hum Our SongPlay

The Centre will manage Chitrashala, a museum of rare vintage graphics from India dating from the middle of the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. On display in its galleries are hundreds of dazzling masterpieces of visual art heritage from the personal collection of Sumant Batra.

Ranging from the mythological narratives and portraits of women from Raja Ravi Varma and other eminent artists of that period to the numerous interpretations of the Hindu Gods in the religious calendars, from the strident melodrama of the Indian commercial cinema posters, lobby cards, film booklets to the staggering variety of colourful labels, from the narratives graphics on the covers of Hindi novels and Indian comics to allegorical outpourings of artists that created illustrations for text and religious books, the Museum covers a wide range of graphic expression.

The stunning and curious graphics, rich and colourful in texture, offer a fascinating glimpse into the vast history of Indian mainstream popular culture and its traditional novelties.
